My degrading outrage

Last night I watched the Colbert Report (and most of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart–I missed the start). As I watch I can’t help but wonder how shows like these are affecting the outrage of our society.

There used to be a difference between leader and politician (or at least, I hope there used to be) and I believe that America only has politicians left. But do I care? At most, when our leaders screw up I find myself first thinking, “I can’t wait to see what Jon Stewart has to say about this.”

How did this happen? Have I come to expect nothing but tomfoolery and corruption from those who are in power? I don’t really care about the state of things, even as I fearfully watch the rise of scapegoats and the degrade of checks-and-balances.

I’m incredibly saddened by this. As much as I think my country needs a wake-up call, I need a wake up call. But then I get bogged down by the time and energy things take (let alone money).
