Office 12 UI First Impressions

First off, I think that the name Office 12 is better than calling it Office 2007, let alone quicker to type :)

I really like the Ribbon. It’s quite a nice departure from the old menus. However, I’m a guy who doesn’t use Office daily so my muscle memory is essentially zero. This cannot be understated and I think people like my friend Don will find Office 12 a bit tougher to adjust to than I would.

The big think I absolutely hate is the decision for Office to use its own theme engine that doesn’t mimic the OS you’re using. It’s terribly annoying having all of these nice, gray windows and toolbar (cuz I abhor the “blue ber alles” theme XP ships with). Office 12 comes with two themes: baby blue and murky black. The black theme is supposed to look great with Windows Vista, but on XP it’s pretty shabby. The baby blue theme then becomes what you should use with XP, but it really bogs the machine down and I hate it when apps of the sort that Office is comprised of have non-standard windows.

Give me square edges and default controls! Needless rounding of corners in an already slow UI makes me think less of this otherwise impressive software.

They should have called it Office Extreme!

The ribbon looks nice, but I’m still on Office ’97 and I plan to stay there so long as I have an OS that will load it. At which point I’m switching to either OpenOffice or WordPad. I dig WordPad.

I stopped using Office a few years ago and haven’t looked back.

HTML and S5 have pretty much replaced my general word processing and presentation needs (though there could be a lot better tools for creating S5 presentations).

What a plea! I’d love to quote book this, but first I need to know what UI stands for! (It would also probably add to the hilarity, once I know the fullness of the quote.)
