Only burgers.

Well, burgers and fries.

Only burgers and fries. And beverages. Burgers, fries, and beverages. That’s the fare of Meat Heads.

It’s a nice change of pace from the overwhelming number of offerings of other restaurants. Clean and simple.

Friday night I had dinner at Meat Heads. I ordered a burger and fries with a drink.

As far as burgers go this was a decent one. It’s a double patty and you get a slew of choices of what to put on it. I ordered everything (minus onions). In my opinion, when someone orders “everything” that should mean “everything we don’t charge extra for” but apparently not at Meat Heads. You see, they offer more interesting and exotic toppings than other burger joints: red peppers, sautéed mushrooms, and the like. I wanted those things on my burger. They were not there.

The decor was nice though; covered in photos of Bloomington the restaurant screams out “I’m a townie!” Other than that, it looks rather inspired by Old Navy, or whomever inspired that store, with it’s simple decor and lighting.

Service wasn’t bad (except for the order botching). They seem to have about 10 people working Jimmy John’s style for each burger. Not a bad concept but it definitely costs more to get a burger and fries when I’m paying 10 people instead of 4. Seriously, 8 dollars is what I spent to try the place out; not worth it.

If you’re hungry for a burger and you live in Bloomington/Normal, go to Bocata Gyros or Big Mouth. I’ll write about them both later.

I was wondering about Big Mouth Burger– that’s in Normal, yes? And did you see they’re reopening Jake’s Pizza on College Ave? I was very happy when I saw that and thought of you!

Stay away from Paisano’s at the Shops of College Hill. SUPER YUCK. Jason and I went there Friday night and were very much NOT impressed. I ate 2 bites of my dinner and Jason ate a few of his, got our money back (or rather, didn’t pay for the grossness) and went to Arby’s, THAT’S how bad it was!

Yep, it’s in Normal, pretty much right across from the kid’s museum.

Two things I’m interested in being at as soon as they open: Jake’s Pizza and the new theater on the North end of town. Sadly I have no idea when either one opens :)

We’re supposed to do the balancing work on that, so I’ll have a good idea when it’s supposed to open. :) We’re some of the last people that works on a bldg before it opens!

I tried Meat Heads last month and I was underwhelmed. I ordered the seasoned/spicy fries, which was a mistake. They were so salty that I couldn’t eat half of them. The burger (with mushrooms) was not bad, but I was expecting something better given the price and atmosphere. I’d be happier with a Hardee’s meal, not to mention a couple of bucks richer.

I’ve never heard of Big Mouth, and I haven’t tried the burgers at Borcata, so I look forward to your reviews. And what of that brewery/restaurant that you mentioned was opening?

  5. Josh Peters says:

Destihl is a bit underwhelming too. I tried 5 (maybe 6?) of their beer varieties and was pretty disappointed. The atmosphere is great, and I’m very willing to give them another chance, but generally speaking they tried too hard to be distinctive and overshot being good.

What’s with your shirt in the picture?

  7. John says:

I agree with Josh about Destihl. They try too hard and don’t acheive much, especially at the prices they charge. But, to me, even the restaurant itself screams: “I don’t know what the owner intended – too many themes. Try to simplify the menu and work on making better brew. If not, then people will find other places to spend our dwindling $$$$,
